Woodcircus project in Finland: underpinning the role of the forest-based sector in the circular bioeconomy

The general assembly of the WoodCircus project was held on 8 July in Helsinki, Finland, at the VTT Technical Research Center.

During the meeting the participants discussed the issues of circular economy, recycling and wood waste management and about the updates of the project.

In particular, Cosmob explored the topic of wood recycling in Italy in the various stages of the value chain, from the collection of waste to the recycling of wood material. The strengths highlighted and the points on which it is necessary to intervene to improve the efficiency of the wood waste management process were presented and compared with those highlighted by the representatives of the other countries participating in the project.

The overall aim of the project WoodCircus is, in fact, to compare recycling management practices at European level, with focus on the construction sector, in order to enhance and disseminate those that best meet the principles of the circular economy. The construction sector is in fact one of the largest sources of wood waste in Europe with an annual production of 70.5 million tons. Currently one third of woody waste is recycled, but these practices are uneven widespread at European level due to different factors related to the technological level of the territory and to the legal and socio-economic context. Hence the need to identify the good practices that guarantee the best performance in terms of recycling of wood and their diffusion among European states in order to optimize performance and minimize waste.
