Bio-based innovation is driving further paradigm changes in bioeconomy, going beyond the “traditional” transformation of biomass to exploit the biological processes and principles of natural forest resources.
Product innovation and bioeconomy: the Forest-Comp project
The ambitious goal of producing large-scale bio-composites, starting from renewable resources and not, is the basis of the project FOREST-COMP in which innovative materials are being developed for industrial production in various sectors: transport, furniture, work clothing (particularly footwear) and construction.
In order to produce increasingly low emissivity furniture products, a technical analysis was carried out that led to the identification of broom as a plant of origin for the obtaining of particles and reinforcement fibers for panels.
In concrete terms, the experimentation of innovative natural and low-emission panels has been initiated: these are panels made with fibers and glues of vegetable origin without the use of formaldehyde, which is intended to be used for the realization of furniture for indoor environments.
In addition, this project involves the application of innovative technologies in order to ensure a more efficient use of forest resources and consequently their enhancement and creation of new value-chains.
The action forms part of a broader concept of integration between sustainable economic development and competitiveness, involving investment in both technological innovation and increased resource efficiency: in this scenario, the world of industrial research to support the manufacturing system is an essential factor in the process of transition to higher standards of sustainability, quality and innovation of products and processes.
