Shower trays: functional requirements for compliance with the UNI EN 14527 standard

The UNI EN 14527 standard specifies the requirements, test methods and procedures for assessing the conformity of shower trays for domestic use.

What are the requirements for a “compliant” shower tray?

The shower tray for domestic use is a product whose main function is to retain water while using the shower and to direct the water towards the drain.

The requirements that characterise a shower base that complies with the standard are made evident by laboratory tests and are as follows:

  • Cleanability – Surface appearance
Surfaces intended for contact with water shall be visibly smooth, non-absorbent and free of inaccessible corners that would impair cleanability.
  • Cleanability – Water drainage
The water shall be drained off completely unless there is no surface tension to hold it back.
The shower base shall have at least one drain hole with dimensions according to EN 251. In case of different dimensions, the appropriate drainage fittings shall be provided.
  • Durability – Fund stability
Following a load test it must not show any deformation, cracks or other defects.
  • Resistance to chemicals and staining agents
Following the application of specific chemical agents, i.e. those present in the most common cleaning products or staining agents, the surface finish of the product must not show any permanent stains or deterioration or any deterioration that cannot be removed with water or specified abrasive substances.
  • Resistance to temperature changes
Following a test in which hot and cold water is allowed to flow alternately over the surface of the shower base, no defects or cracks should appear which would impair its use.

A safe shower tray is CE marked.

A shower tray for domestic use is a product that is subject to mandatory CE marking, the certificate of conformity that signals to the consumer that the product fully complies with the essential safety requirements and allows it to circulate freely within the European Economic Area.

In addition, from 1 July 2013, Regulation EC 305/2011 came into force, imposing the Obligation of a Declaration of Performance (DoP) for all construction products subject to CE marking. The “CE” symbol will only be affixed to products for which a DoP has been drawn up in which the main product information is indicated.

In the specific case of shower trays, the following characteristics must necessarily be disclosed:

  • Standard number,
  • Cleanability,
  • Type of product,
  • Durability.

In conclusion, in order to place a shower tray on the market, it is necessary to carry out the tests to verify the conformity with the reference harmonised standard in order to ascertain the compliance with the essential requirements established by the EC Regulation.

COSMOB, through its Test Laboratory Division, is able to provide technical support in the verification of product conformity through initial type tests and in the drafting of the Declaration of Performance.
