Washbasins: functional requirements for compliance with UNI EN 14688

The standard UNI EN 14688 “Sanitary appliances – Functional requirements and test methods” specifies the functional requirements and test methods for washbasins for domestic use (including those installed in hotels, hostels, hospitals and similar buildings) and defines all the necessary characteristics of CE marking on these products.

What are the requirements for a “compliant” washbasin?

The washbasin consists of a water source, a collection basin with a drain hole (with or without overflow) and with or without hole(s) for fixing the tap, and has the function of temporary collection of water for sanitary use.

There are different types of washbasins and they are distinguished by the method of installation and can be freestanding, wall-hung or recessed in the cabinet.

The requirements that characterise a compliant washbasin are made evident by laboratory tests and are as follows:

  • Resistance to temperature variations: at the end of the test, the products must not show any defects, cracks or delaminations which could compromise their use;
  • Load resistance: at the end of the test, the suspended washbasin must not show any cracks, breaks or permanent distortions;
  • Resistance to chemicals and staining agents: some test areas are defined and specific chemical agents foreseen by the standard are applied (acetic acid, sodium hydroxide, ethanol…) and then the results are analysed to check that there are no stains or deteriorations that cannot be removed with water or abrasive substances;
  • Surface stability: two types of tests are carried out to check resistance to scratching and resistance to abrasion;
  • Cleanability: all washbasins are visually inspected for non-absorbent, smooth and easily cleanable functional surfaces and for sharp internal angles that would hinder cleaning.

How to recognise washbasins with CE marking?

The washbasin is a product subject to mandatory CE marking, the certificate of conformity that signals to the consumer that the product fully complies with the essential safety requirements and allows free circulation within the European Economic Area.

Moreover, from 1 July 2013, Regulation EC 305/2011 came into force, imposing the Obligation of a Declaration of Performance (DoP) for all construction products subject to CE marking. The “CE” symbol will only be affixed to products for which a DoP has been drawn up in which the main product information is indicated.

It should also be remembered that the manufacturer is responsible for the application of the CE marking, the symbol of which must appear on the washbasin or – where this is not possible – on the documentation accompanying the product.

In conclusion, in order to place a washbasin on the market, it is necessary to carry out tests to verify compliance with the reference harmonised standard in order to ensure compliance with the essential requirements set out in the EC Regulation.

COSMOB, through its Test Laboratory Division, is able to provide technical support in the verification of product conformity through initial type tests and in the drafting of the Declaration of Performance.
